Biography |
Virginia Madsen was born on September 11, 1961, in Chicago,
Illinois, to Cal and Elaine Madsen. Fittingly, she was born
into a family already well acquainted with the acting world,
as well as real-life drama. Her mother is an award-winning
writer, poet and producer, while her father was a
firefighter. An interesting note about her: Virginia was
born with two different colored eyes. Her left one is brown
and green, while her right one is all green.
Virginia began honing her acting skills during her teens
while at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. She
was bitten by the acting bug and continued perfecting her
talents.
Virginia took lessons at the Ted Liss acting studio in
Chicago, as well as at the Harand Camp Adult Theater Seminar
in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. In the early '80s, she decided
the time was right to move to Hollywood with her
then-boyfriend and fellow performer Bill Campbell.
At 19, she made her onscreen debut in the sexy teen comedy
Class (her first official topless appearance). Her brother,
Michael Madsen, refuses to watch any movie in which Virginia
has appeared nude.
Class was an unpromising start to her career, as the film
was not a huge success, but juicier roles soon began to
trickle in, beginning with a part in David Lynch's Dune
(1984). However, her early career remained tepid, mirroring
a rocky relationship that ended in a broken engagement from
Bill Campbell in 1989. She then hooked up with and married
actor Danny Huston.
Between 1989 and 1992, Virginia achieved varying degrees of
stardom in such movies as Heart of Dixie, The Hot Spot,
Highlander II: The Quickening, Becoming Colette and
Candyman.
In 1992, Virginia divorced Huston and soon took up with
Antonio Sabato Jr., with whom she had a son, Jack, in 1994.
But the relationship with Sabato Jr. did not last. Virginia
admits to having distanced herself from acting (and men) at
this point in order to concentrate on raising her son and
figuring out why her acting career had never taken off like
she'd hoped.
The next 10 years saw her working on minor roles in movies
and low-profile TV projects such as Dune 2, The Prophecy,
The Rainmaker, The Haunting, After Sex, Children of Fortune,
and Tempted.
With the recent success of Sideways (2004), Virginia is now
on top of her game and feels the time is right for a new guy
in her life. Though she did not win for Best Supporting
Actress, the nomination nod has already landed her another
big-time project in the form of Harrison Ford's wife in the
upcoming The Wrong Element. |
