Biography |
In the town of Southfield, Michigan, Selma Blair Beitner was
born June 23, 1972. Blair decided to take a big step and
move to New York City to pursue a career in photography,
after receiving a combined degree in Fine Arts and English
from Michigan University. But once in the Big Apple, she
realized that her future did not lie behind the camera, but
in front of it.
At the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York City, Blair
honed her raw skills and was soon discovered in one of her
acting classes by an agent. She earned her Screen Actor's
Guild card one week later, after doing a television
commercial for the Theater of Virginia. Her official acting
debut was on the TV series The Adventures of Pete and Pete
in 1993, which was followed by spot roles in Soldier of
Fortune, Inc. and Promised Land.
Proof of proper tutelage, Blair realized that being a
successful actress does not only mean roles in box-office
hits. She starred in movies that flew under the radar upon
release but went on to become great video rentals. It was
the praise from these films, namely Girl, Brown's Requiem
and Strong Island Boys, which helped get her name out among
filmmakers' circles.
Blair's career began to snowball and it took a great
performance in Cruel Intentions to push herself over the
edge. Contacts were made and the phone was ringing off the
hook after the success of the film, for which Blair received
a "Best Kiss" award from the MTV Movie Awards and a
nomination for Best Breakthrough Performance for her role as
Cecile Caldwell. The Warner Brothers network also grabbed
her for the title role in the 1999 sitcom Zoe (formerly Zoe,
Duncan, Jack & Jane), which met its fate in 2000.
Apparently, Blair did not stir enough controversy with Cruel
Intentions, because in 2001 she stripped down to nothing in
Storytelling to get it on with her college professor.
Roles in hits like Legally Blonde and The Sweetest Thing
followed, and her success is obviously still going strong
with the upcoming A Guy Thing and Dallas and Rusty.
Although having claimed that it was tough to find a guy who
was more than just a handsome face in her business, Blair is
romantically linked to Jason Schwartzman of Rushmore fame.
With a man and a strong hold on her career, we vow to pay
close attention to Selma Blair's career and warn you of any
more upcoming nude roles in independent films... or any kind
of film for that matter. |
