Biography |
Suzana Drobnjakovic was born on May 17, 1975, in Los
Angeles, California. The child of a Serbian mother and an
Italian father, Sasha knew from an early age that she wanted
to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. She first
got a taste of the acting bug in the seventh grade, after
she signed up for a drama class on a whim. It was there that
she was cast in a play called Baby and was essentially
thrust into the leading role, which provided her with an
irresistible introduction to the addictive world of acting.
Sasha spent the rest of her school and college years
pursuing her newfound passion for performing, going so far
as to change her virtually impossible-to-pronounce name to
the far more palatable Sasha Alexander (Sasha is a childhood
moniker, while Alexander is the name of her brother). When
not studying cinema and television at the University of
Southern California, Sasha began the slow process of
perfecting her craft at various summer stock and Shakespeare
festivals.
It was around that time that Sasha began receiving positive
acclaim for her work, and even landed a stint at the
prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company under the tutelage of
renowned voice teacher Cicely Berry. In 1997, Sasha won a
bit part in a long-since-forgotten made-for-television movie
called Supply & Demand -- a role that led to appearances in
a series of critically acclaimed shorts, one being directed
by future Donnie Darko filmmaker Richard Kelly.
Her big break arrived in the form of a TV series called
Wasteland, from creator Kevin Williamson (the brains behind
the Scream trilogy and Dawson's Creek). Though the show only
managed to hang around for four episodes before being
cancelled, Sasha made such a positive impact on Williamson
that he hired her for a recurring role on the Creek as
Pacey's (Joshua Jackson's character) older sister.
Bit parts in high-profile shows like Friends and CSI: Crime
Scene Investigation followed, and in 2003, Sasha joined the
cast of the JAG spinoff NCIS as a tough-as-nails ex-Secret
Service agent. It's a role that required a delicate
balancing act of comedy and drama from Sasha, but as she's
proved time and time again, she has no qualms about stepping
into the shoes of increasingly complex characters.
After two years on the show, Sasha had tired of the daily
grind of series television and asked to be let go from her
contract (her character was subsequently killed off in a
riveting, season-ending cliffhanger).
She used the time off to work on her personal life, and
announced that she is expecting her first child with her
fiancé, director Eduardo Ponti (son of Sophia Loren).
Despite motherhood, Sasha hasn't given up on acting, given
her pivotal role in the 2006 blockbuster Mission: Impossible
III alongside Tom Cruise. |
