Biography |
Patty Griffin was on March 16, 1964, in Old Town, Maine. She
is the youngest of seven children and was born into a family
of singers. Patty bought her first guitar at the age of 16,
and it was around that same that she began to write her own
songs. However, it was quite a while before she started to
perform with her self-engineered band, Patty and the
Executives, in 1980.
It wasn’t until 1992 in Boston that Patty Griffin started
accumulating gigs to show off her music prowess. But when
she finally did start performing, Boston music lovers
quickly turned in her favor, and before she knew it, she was
amassing music gigs all over Boston.
Patty’s success led to a desire to take her music to the
next level; she began recording a series of demos. Without
the money to produce professionally recorded tapes, Patty
recorded out of her apartment. Her demo tapes were regarded
as being better than her performances by many, and the
sharing of her tapes eventually led to her signing with a
record label.
In 1996, Patty signed with A&M Records. The record label
fell in love with her demo tape, and Patty was promptly
recording her first professionally produced album in New
Orleans. However, because of her independent nature, Patty
felt that her first album had been overproduced, and as a
result, those recordings from New Orleans went unreleased.
In turn, A&M produced the album Living with Ghosts, a
compilation of Patty’s demo tape recordings.
After Living with Ghosts was well-received, A&M was quick to
produce another record with Patty. In 1998, Flaming Red was
released. She departed from the acoustic sound of her first
album to a more rock ‘n’ roll-based compilation. Patty
recorded one last album with A&M, but the record label was
bought out almost immediately after its completion, and her
third album, Silver Bell, went unreleased. Since then,
however, many of her albums have leaked out or have been
re-recorded.
After A&M was bought out, Patty signed with ATO Records in
2001. Since signing with them, her popularity and name
recognition rose to new levels. She released four albums in
five years with the new label (2002’s 1000 Kisses, 2003’s A
Kiss in Time, 2004’s Impossible Dream, and 2007’s Children
Running Through), and wrote and re-produced several of her
own songs for more noteworthy folk and country artists such
as the Dixie Chicks, Bette Midler, Jessica Simpson, and Joan
Osborne. Patty also toured with Buddy Miller, David Rawlings
and Sweet Harmony Traveling Revue. |
