Biography |
Melanie Jayne Chisholm was born on January 12, 1974, in
Merseyside, England. Her mother Joan was a singer in a rock
band, who first met Melanie's father, Alan Chisholm, in The
Cavern, a club in Liverpool where the Beatles played their
early shows. Melanie's parents divorced and both remarried
when she was a little girl; as a result, she now has one
brother, four half-brothers and one half-sister.
As a child, Melanie took ballet lessons, and showed great
athletic and dancing promise. She also became a devoted fan
of the Liverpool Football Club. After high school, Melanie
attended the Doreen Bird Performing Arts College in Kent,
but she was about to achieve showbiz fame along a different
route. In 1994, she auditioned for a new all-girl pop group,
originally called "Touch" and the brainchild of promoter
Chris Herbert. Melanie almost missed her final callback
thanks to a bout of chronic tonsilitis; nevertheless, out of
thousands of hopefuls, Melanie -- along with Geri Halliwell,
Victoria Adams, Melanie Brown, and Emma Bunton -- made the
cut.
Now calling themselves the Spice Girls, Melanie and her new
compatriots began what was supposed to be a two-year process
of training and rehearsals. Yet after less than a year of
adopting the regimen dictated by Herbert, Geri Halliwell led
Melanie and the other Spice Girls away from their original
management, and the girls signed with Virgin Records in
1995. Melanie got her nickname, "Sporty Spice," from Smash
Hits, a UK magazine that declared her to be the most
tomboyish of the group. From then on Melanie played up the
image, appearing in tracksuits and other athletic
paraphernalia.
Meanwhile, the Spice Girls were on the cusp of stardom.
Their first single was released in 1996, followed by their
debut album, Spice, which sold over 20 million copies. In
1997, the sophomore album Spiceworld was released, as was a
sophomoric movie of the same name.
By that time, the Spice Girls had already peaked. In 1998,
Geri Halliwell became the first to leave the group for a
solo career. Melanie stayed with the Spice Girls, but took
the opportunity to branch out, too. She recorded "When
You're Gone" with Bryan Adams that same year, and in 1999
released her solo debut, Northern Star. It eventually sold
three million copies, making it the most successful
solo-Spice Girl effort.
In 2000, the Spice Girls (now a quartet instead of a
quintet) released their third and final album, the
ironically-titled flop Forever. Soon thereafter, Melanie
left the group for good.
In 2003, Melanie released Reason, her second solo album. The
record was poorly received, and, thanks in part to
lackluster promotion and even incompetent packaging,
registered as a great disappointment. The failure of Reason
spurred Melanie to leave Virgin Records, and, in 2004, she
founded her own record company, Red Girl Records (a
reference to her love for Liverpool's football team, whose
color is red).
By 2005, things had turned a corner in Melanie's solo
career. Her third album, Beautiful Intentions was released
that spring to reviews calling it her best effort to date.
The first single from the album, "Next Best Superstar," did
well on the charts. The second single, "Better Alone," was
only available for download on Melanie's official site and
on iTunes, and was thus ineligible for chart entry. |
