Biography |
Emma Caulfield was born Emma Chukker on April 8th, 1973.
Raised in San Diego, California, she has a mixed heritage --
German on her father's side, Irish on her mother's. Emma has
an older sister Samantha, who is now a department store
manager in San Diego.
Emma had an early interest in theater, especially musical
theater (her mother is a professional singer). In high
school, Emma studied drama at the La Jolla Playhouse and the
Old Globe Theater. She gave up acting for a while, taking
psychology at San Francisco State University, before
studying drama at UCLA. Later, Caulfield traveled to London,
England, to further her dramatic studies. She was also
involved in a brief, failed marriage during these years.
Anticipating her later success, Emma Caulfield's first
notable roles came on television. After a guest appearance
on Saved by the Bell: The New Class in 1994, she was cast as
Susan Keats, in a recurring role on Beverly Hills, 90210 in
1995 and 1996. Caulfield followed this up with the role of
Lorraine Miller on General Hospital from 1996 to 1997. By
the late '90s, Emma's credits included Renegade, Silk
Stalkings, Weird Science, and Nash Bridges.
Emma's big break came in 1998, when she made her first
appearance as Anya on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, during the
show's third season. Originally seen in the episode "The
Wish" as Anyanka/Anya, Patron Saint of Scorned Women in the
guise of a high school student, Caulfield reprised the role
in subsequent episodes.
"I was made to feel welcome on Buffy right from the start,"
Emma explains, and she reciprocated by making Anya memorable
among Buffy's dramatis personae thanks to her acerbic humor.
Eventually, Anya was developed to the point where, by 1999,
Emma had become part of the regular cast, and remained on
the show until its finale in May 2003.
As Buffy was drawing to a close, Emma's profile had grown
enough that she could make the jump into feature films. In
early 2003, she played Caitlin Greene in the Revolution
Studios thriller Darkness Falls. "She's the complete
opposite of Anya," Caulfield said of her new character.
After that successful feature debut (Darkness Falls topped
the box office in its first week of release), Emma Caulfield
began to work on new projects. She stars as herself in
2004's Bandwagon, a satirical docudrama co-executive
produced by Emma, and in the ABC made-for-TV movie I Want to
Marry Ryan Banks, alongside fellow Beverly Hills, 90210
alumnus Jason Priestly. |
