Biography |
Born in Houston, Texas, in 1985, Brooke Valentine was
displaying her vocal talents from the time she was able to
speak. The eldest of three children, Brooke would sing along
with the radio as an infant, and then, once in elementary
school, she would wow her classmates and teachers by singing
in the schoolyard.
Though she was willing to hone her vocal gift, Brooke was
shy as a child, and it took some prodding for her to
practice in front of an audience. To encourage her, Brooke's
grandmother would sign her up for solo performances at
church every Sunday. Thrust into the role of soloist in
front of the entire congregation, Brooke would always shine.
Brooke began to dream of making a career out of singing, and
as a young teen, that dream became a possible reality. While
strolling through a mall with a friend, Brooke struck up a
conversation with an enterprising young man named Deja, who
happened to be an aspiring music producer. Brooke showed off
her singing abilities to her new friend and soon, Deja went
to work helping her further develop them.
When Brooke was 14, Deja introduced her to two other young
singers, and together they formed the group BKS (Best Kept
Secret). Traveling from state to state, the young R&B group
did a number of small gigs, but parted ways before anything
of real significance developed.
Not dissuaded by her experience with BKS, Brooke kept at it,
visiting the studio almost as much as she attended her
school classes. In fact, music became an all-consuming
passion for Brooke, an obsession that angered her mother,
who had raised her child alone since birth. The issue of
Brooke's time in the studio became such a point of
contention that Mama Valentine eventually kicked her out of
the house.
Though not yet 16 years old, the young singer proved to be
quite resourceful. When her mentor and quasi-manager Deja
decided to move to Los Angeles in 2002, Brooke followed him,
set on developing a solo career. Her dreams soon came true
when, after months of grueling hours in the studio, Deja and
Brooke completed her demo and submitted it to Virgin
Records. The Virgin executives were blown away, and they
immediately signed her to a deal.
It took two more years of practice and training before
Brooke was ready to start work on her debut album. This span
of time must have translated into a lot of pent-up
creativity for the singer, who managed to write and record
her album in just four months. Released on March 15, 2005,
Chain Letter featured a wide range of catchy tracks, all
co-written by Valentine and produced by the best hitmakers
of the hip-hop world.
Fittingly, it did not take long for one of Brooke's songs to
become a hit. Her first release, "Girlfight," was an instant
hit on the radio and in the clubs, fueled by rumours that
the song had been inspired by a run-in with fellow
R&B/hip-hopper Ciara. From here, news of Brooke's arrival on
the scene spread like wildfire. Her collaborations with
popular rap icons (such as the late Ol' Dirty Bastard on the
track "Blah, Blah, Blah") and the backing of several
established producers made Brooke's future success a
sure-fire bet.
As "Girlfight" continued to get serious airplay, Brooke
showed off her sexy body in a cool video for the track, then
set off on a television and radio promotional tour. In April
of 2005, Rolling Stone magazine dubbed Brooke one of its "10
Artists to Watch." |
