Biography |
Amber Tamblyn was born on May 14, 1983, in Santa
Monica, California. Her father, Russ, is a musical actor
(noted for West Side Story and Seven Brides for Seven
Brothers) and her mother, Bonnie, is a singer and artist; it
was only natural that Amber would have taken to show
business. Amber attended an elementary school for the arts
in Southern California, where she performed in a total of 13
plays between kindergarten and eighth grade.
Amber's professional break came in the fourth grade, when
she was portraying the irrepressible Pippi Longstocking in a
school play. A long-time family friend and agent caught
Amber's performance, and urged Russ Tamblyn to encourage his
daughter's talent. At first the seasoned actor was wary,
knowing the pitfalls of the profession; but he relented and
the 9-year-old Amber went on her first auditions.
It soon became clear that there was no need to worry. In a
matter of months, Amber landed her first roles, appearing in
the movies Live Nude Girls (1995), Rebellious (1995) and
Johnny Mysto: Boy Wizard (1996). In the fall of 1994, Amber
was cast to play a short-term role on the long-running soap
opera General Hospital. But the role of Emily Quartermaine
soon became more prominent, and Amber would end up in over
600 episodes over a six-year period. In 1999, Amber received
the Hollywood Reporter's YoungStar Award for Best Young
Actress in a Daytime TV Program.
However, the demanding schedule of General Hospital meant
that Amber had to pass on other promising roles. As a
result, she left the show when her contract was up in the
spring of 2001. She auditioned with a vengeance, and landed
multiple guest appearances between 2001 and 2003, on such
television shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Boston Public,
The Twilight Zone, CSI: Miami, and Without a Trace; she also
appeared in the hit horror movie, The Ring (2002).
Amber Tamblyn became a true star in 2003, when she was cast
in the title role in CBS's hit show Joan of Arcadia. The new
show already has a loyal fan base and an estimated 11
million viewers each night; in 2004 it won a People's Choice
Award for Favorite New Dramatic Series.
Naturally, much of the attention has rubbed off on the star
of the show -- Amber Tamblyn. Her portrayal of the troubled
teen who talks to God earned her a Golden Globe and Emmy
nomination (both in 2004).
Now Amber's options are more open than ever. Currently
filming the upcoming movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling
Pants (set for a 2005 release), Amber is balancing other
film offers while working to keep Joan of Arcadia in ratings
heaven.
She fills her spare time with other artistic endeavors,
including singing, dancing and theater, and she writes
poetry. She has self-published two books of poems, Of The
Dawn and Plenty of Ships, and her work has appeared in the
San Francisco publications Cups and Poetry USA. |
