Biography |
Alexis Bledel was born on September 16, 1981, in
Houston, Texas. Her mother, Nanette, is Mexican and her
father, Martin, is Argentinean. She has one younger brother,
Eric David Bledel. Her first language is Spanish, which is
the language she spoke at home; she only learned to speak
English when she started school.
When Alexis was 8 years old, her parents encouraged her to
act in Houston community theater to combat her shyness; she
starred in productions of The Wizard of Oz and Aladdin.
While attending Saint Agnes Academy in Houston, Alexis was
discovered by a talent scout for Company Management modeling
agency. As of the age of 14, during summer breaks in high
school, she relocated to Manhattan to work as a catalog
model and traveled to cities such as Milan and Tokyo.
She also studied modeling and acting at the Page Parkes
Center for Modeling and Acting during her teens. After
graduating high school, she enrolled in NYU's Tisch School
of Arts to study writing and directing for one year.
Alexis' first big-screen appearance was an uncredited bit
part in Rushmore (1998). She was featured in Seventeen
magazine, modeling prom dresses in 1999, and again in 2000
as a lip gloss model. But her big breakthrough came when she
auditioned for the WB's hit show Gilmore Girls in 2000.
Since she took on the role of fast-talking, witty Rory
Gilmore, daughter of Lorelai (played by Lauren Graham), her
fame has increased tenfold.
In 2002, Alexis starred alongside Ben Kingsley and Sissy
Spacek in her first major big-screen role in Tuck
Everlasting. That same year, she won the Family Television
Award for Best Actress in a Drama for Gilmore Girls and was
voted one of the hottest stars under 25 by Teen People
magazine. In 2004, she appeared in the short film
DysEnchanted and the Bollywood musical film Bride &
Prejudice.
2005 is a breakout year for Alexis; she appeared in The
Orphan King, played a prostitute alongside Jessica Alba and
Benicio Del Toro in Frank Miller's Sin City, and starred
with Amber Tamblyn in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Alexis is currently working on the film I'm Reed Fish, set
for release in 2006, while she continues to star in Gilmore
Girls. She has been romantically linked with former Gilmore
Girls costar Milo Ventimiglia since he was hired on as a
cast member in 2001.
When she's not working, Alexis enjoys playing the piano.
During breaks on the Gilmore Girls set, she often heads to
her trailer to practice on her keyboard. She also volunteers
for First Book, a national youth literacy program for the
underprivileged. Her favorite bands are Incubus and
Radiohead. Other hobbies include photography, writing and
reading, watching movies, and being with her family. She
resides in Los Angeles, California. |
